Discarded plastic bottles can be transformed through artistic creation and creative design, endowing them with new functions and meanings while promoting environmental awareness.
In the realm of individual and community arts and crafts, the "Waste Regeneration Design" course developed by the Kongjiang Middle School Cultural and Creative Center showcased works such as "Plastic Garden," "Jellyfish Crisis," and "Tottering"-all crafted from discarded plastic bottles-at an art exhibition. Students at Hubei University of Technology manually cut, assembled, and spray-painted discarded plastic bottles to create artworks modeled after Sanxingdui bronze masks. A "Creative Upcycling" handicraft competition featured award-winning entries such as "Mineral Water Bottle Fish Lantern" and "Koi Lantern" (made from mineral water bottles and wire), "Blue Dream" (a bouquet made from beverage bottles), and "Lotus of Good Fortune" (a lotus-shaped piece made from plastic bottles). During an environmental protection event in Taipingqiao Subdistrict, residents transformed plastic bottles into creative planters featuring various designs, such as hanging and open-work styles.
Regarding public art installations and community projects, the "Luxelakes Bottle Bank" zero-waste art community initiative in Chengdu reimagined recycled plastic bottles through painting, crafting, and other creative techniques, eventually evolving into a bottle-based puppet theater performance; this project won the Special Award for Sustainability (Kunpeng Award) at the 2024 Shenzhen Global Design Award. China Resources Beverage's "C'estbon 'Baby' Remodeling Project" redesigned recycled plastic bottles into brand-new public facilities; for instance, in Nanjiang, Sichuan, a design team created a basketball hoop from 46,050 plastic bottle caps and donated it to a rural school. As part of the "New Life for Old Bottles" recycling initiative at Ningbo Library, patrons could exchange discarded plastic bottles for stickers and creative products made from recycled polyester fiber; the collected bottles were also stacked by artists to form an eco-friendly Christmas tree art installation-a project shortlisted for the 2025 IFLA Green Library Award. Additionally, the Mizone brand constructed a "Regenerated Rest Station" public art space in Shenzhen's Bijia Mountain Sports Park, utilizing over 6,000 recycled bottle bodies and 90,000 bottle caps. In terms of creative technology applications, the "Bottle-to-Filament" project from the Vocational and Technical College of Shanghai Jianqiao University utilizes a semi-automated device to transform waste plastic bottles into 3D printing filament with a conversion rate of up to 80%; this project won a gold award at the China International College Students' "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.
Such creative upcycling projects are frequently exhibited and honored at various design festivals, art festivals, and environmental competitions-such as the "Usefulness of the Useless" Recycled Art Exhibition, the Hubei University of Technology Design and Art Festival, the Shenzhen Global Design Award ("Kunpeng Award"), and the China International College Students' Innovation Competition.
