Heating standard paper bowls is not recommended: Most takeout paper bowls feature an internal PE (polyethylene) coating; microwaving them may release microplastics or harmful substances, and the material has a low ignition point, posing a fire risk.
Short-term heating is permissible only with specific markings: Only paper bowls marked "microwave-safe" on the bottom-made of PP5 plastic and free of metallic decorations-should be heated in the microwave for short periods (1–2 minutes) at medium-to-low power.
The safest approach: It is best to transfer food to a ceramic or glass bowl before microwaving and to avoid using paper packaging that contains wax coatings or ink printing.
